Key Research Findings

1.6 Data Collection Process and Findings

The research team gathered data on 40 AI-related businesses and organizations operating across Ghana. Data collection was conducted through both online and physical research. Online research involved the identification and profiling of companies, startups, and organizations active in AI-related initiatives via company websites, LinkedIn, news articles, and institutional reports. Physical research included business interactions, stakeholder engagements, and participation in AI and digital innovation events where data could be validated.

1.6.0 Primary Users

These include existing AI firms, consultancies, data annotation companies, AI policy advocates, and innovation organizations actively engaged in developing, deploying, or regulating AI solutions in Ghana. Examples include GhanaNLP, Aya Data, and Innovation Spark, which formed the basis of the in-depth interviews.

Challenges:

  • Unreliable internet connectivity and inconsistent power supply hinder their AI deployment and data workflows.
  • Many small businesses lack structured or digitized records.
  • Access to quality data is limited i.e unstructured data makes training models difficult.
  • Business owners often do not understand the practical benefits of AI.
  • Language gaps affect their training sometimes.

1.6.1 Secondary Users

These are non-AI businesses that either integrate AI tools to enhance their performance (e.g., marketing automation, predictive analytics, customer service chatbots) or use bespoke AI solutions developed by third parties to optimize their operations.

Challenges:

  • Much of their data is gathered manually and lacks structure.
  • Many policymakers lack foundational knowledge in AI, making it hard to build relevant regulations or programs.
  • AI is often hidden in services and not fully understood or utilized by clients.

Cross-Cutting Infrastructure Challenges

  • Data scarcity across the ecosystem.
  • Dialect variations complicate NLP model development.
  • Lack of qualified annotators for local languages.
  • Infrastructure limitations affecting the entire AI value chain.
